The Custom Blend

Six seats. Endless oils.

This is the heart of the shop, and it hasn't changed since 1992. No machines, no algorithms — just you, a blender, and shelves of little amber bottles.

    Settle in

    Pull up one of the six stools at the wooden blending bar. The kettle of the city stays outside.

  2. II.

    Sniff

    Work through over a hundred natural oils — earthy, floral, fruity, green, musky, smoky — until a few make your eyes close.

  3. III.

    Blend

    With a blender guiding you, your favorites are layered drop by drop until the mix smells like you.

  4. IV.

    Name it

    Your creation gets a name — yours, or something sillier — written by hand on its label.

  5. V.

    Archive it

    Your exact formula is written on a card and filed in a black box on the lavender wall. It stays there forever.

Every scent ever blended here lives on in a black box — thousands of handwritten recipe cards going back to 1992. Most of our guests become regulars for exactly this reason: your scent is never lost. Run out in a month or in ten years, and we can make it again, drop for drop.

Book all six stools and make it an occasion.

The bar was made for celebrating. Bachelorette parties, birthdays, galentines, "we just felt like it" — bring up to six people and spend the afternoon blending a scent for each of you. Everyone leaves with their own bottle, their own name on a label, and their own black box on the wall.

Our Story

Thirty-four years behind the lavender door.

1979

Lalita Kumut arrives in New York from Bangkok — a nurse with a nose so precise she could tell how serious an infection was by smell alone.

1992

Deciding her adoptive city needed to smell better, she opens the Fragrance Shop on East 4th Street — chosen because, in her words, the East Village people are "beautiful, friendly."

2000s

The wall of black boxes fills with thousands of formulas. Regulars fly in from around the world for refills of scents they made decades ago.

2020

The pandemic nearly closes the door for good — until decades of archived recipes, and the loyal customers attached to them, carry the shop through.

Today

Claire Lewis — once a customer who fell in love with perfume-making at this very bar — keeps the shop going with Lalita's blessing, and Lalita close by as consultant.

Do I need a reservation?

No — walk-ins are always welcome. But we highly encourage booking ahead: the shop gets busy, and there are only six seats at the blending bar. A quick call to 212-254-8950 saves you a wait.

Where are you located?

At 65 East 4th Street, between 2nd Avenue and Bowery, in Manhattan's East Village (New York, NY 10003). Look for the lavender door.

What are your store hours?

We're open daily from 12 to 7 pm. Hours occasionally shift, so please call ahead at 212-254-8950 before making a special trip.

How do refills work?

Every custom blend's formula is archived in our scent library — forever. To reorder, call or email us with the name on your bottle, and choose your format: perfume oil, spray, lotion, bath & massage oil, or bath salts.

Can I book a birthday or bachelorette party?

Absolutely — parties are our favorite. The bar seats up to six, and you can reserve all of it. Call us to plan the details.

Do you ship? What's the return policy?

We ship anywhere in the U.S. via USPS — allow up to 5 business days for us to blend and pack your order, and 3–10 business days in transit. For international shipping, give us a call. Because every product is made to order, all sales are final — we can't accept returns, exchanges, or refunds.
