It's an experience — not a class.

It's an experience like nothing else: you smell your way through an abundance of fragrances, then sit with a trained blender — your personal perfumist — who mixes your favorites in exactly the right ratios. You refine it together, drop by drop, until it's perfect: a custom fragrance created by you, for you.

    Every great fragrance begins with discovery. Explore over 100 fragrance notes and take your time discovering the scents that speak to you. There are no right or wrong choices—just the excitement of finding what you love.

    Now the fun begins. We'll place your selected notes onto fragrance strips so you can smell how they work together. Compare different combinations, notice the subtle differences, and discover how even a small adjustment can completely change your fragrance. This is where your signature scent begins to take shape.

    Smell, tweak, repeat — a touch more of this, one drop less of that — until it's exactly right.

Since 1992, we've archived thousands of unique formulas by hand, allowing our guests to return months—or even years—later and have their fragrance recreated exactly as they remember it. Whether you prefer perfume spray, perfume oil, lotion, or bath oil, your signature scent is never lost. It's waiting here for you.

Simply call or email us with the name on your bottle, and we'll recreate your fragrance exactly as it was originally blended. We'll even ship it anywhere in the United States.

Parties at the Bar

Private Perfume Parties.

The bar was made for celebrating. Bachelorette parties, birthdays, galentines, "we just felt like it" — spend the afternoon blending a scent for each of you. Everyone leaves with their own bottle, their own name on a label, and their own black box on the wall.

  • A $25 deposit is required to reserve your private party
  • Your deposit is fully refundable if you cancel at least 2 days before your event — otherwise it is non-refundable
  • A 15% gratuity will be added to the final bill
  • During your event, the shop is closed to the public — your group has the entire space to yourselves
  • You're welcome to bring your own beverages — just let us know in advance

Our Story

We've been blending here for 34 years.

1992

Founder Lalita opens the lavender door on East 4th Street — more than a perfume shop: a place to slow down, explore fragrance, and leave with something completely your own.

2000s

The wall of black boxes fills with thousands of formulas. Regulars fly in from around the world for refills of scents they made decades ago.

2020

When word spreads that the pandemic might close the shop for good, the neighborhood answers — regulars and strangers alike keep ordering, refilling, and checking in until the lavender door can safely stay open.

Today

"I'm waiting for the right person to walk through that door." When Claire Lewis walked in to talk perfume parties, Lalita found her — and entrusted her with the shop, the Formula Library, and the tradition.

Our Story

The Fragrance Shop New York has been part of the East Village since 1992. From the very beginning, founder Lalita created more than a perfume shop—she created a place where people could slow down, explore fragrance, and leave with something that was completely their own.

Years later, I walked into the shop with a different idea in mind. At the time, I was hosting perfume parties and wanted to see if Lalita would be interested in collaborating. During our conversation, my husband asked her a simple question: "When are you going to retire?"

She smiled and said, "I'm waiting for the right person to walk through that door—someone with the same passion who will keep the shop alive." Neither of us realized it then, but that conversation would change my life.

Not long afterward, Lalita entrusted me with The Fragrance Shop. It wasn't just the purchase of a business—it was the passing of a tradition that had begun in 1992.

More than 30 years later, that tradition continues—one customer, one fragrance, and one story at a time.

Do I need a reservation?

No — walk-ins are always welcome. But we highly encourage booking ahead, especially on weekends: the shop gets busy and seating at the bar is limited. Book online above, or call 212-254-8950.

Where are you located?

At 65 East 4th Street, between 2nd Avenue and Bowery, in Manhattan's East Village (New York, NY 10003). Look for the lavender door.

What are your store hours?

We're open daily from 12 to 7 pm. Hours occasionally shift, so please call ahead at 212-254-8950 before making a special trip.

How do refills work?

Every custom blend's formula is archived in our scent library — forever. To reorder, call or email us with the name on your bottle, and choose your format: perfume oil, spray, lotion, bath & massage oil, or bath salts.

Can I book a birthday or bachelorette party?

Absolutely — parties are our favorite, and we've hosted much bigger groups than the bar suggests. Book up to five seats online; for six or more, call us and we'll plan a private event together.

Do you ship? What's the return policy?

We ship anywhere in the U.S. via USPS — allow up to 5 business days for us to blend and pack your order, and 3–10 business days in transit. For international shipping, give us a call. Because every product is made to order, all sales are final — we can't accept returns, exchanges, or refunds.
